The first thing developed was the 4S Industrial Park, which opened in the late 1998. Jobs in this area have fueled the demand for additional housing.
So far, over half of the eventual 4,715 homes have been built. Development will continue until 2010. 4S Ranch has a variety of residences, both attached and detached homes, in a wide range of prices.
A $3 million Boys & Girls Club and a new fire stations opened recently. Soon there will also be a new Sheriff Department substation, library, a 25 acre
community park, and 4S Commons, a 53 acre mixed commercial district. 
Four schools are planned, which will be part of the Poway Unified School District. Stone Ranch Elementary is already open. A second elementary school, tentatively named Silver Crest Elementary, is scheduled to open in northern 4S Ranch.
More that 1,600 acres of 4S Ranch will be preserved open space and there will be a network of paths connecting the neighborhoods to the community facilities.
