Rancho Penasquitos lies just west of I-15, between Rancho Bernardo and Mira Mesa. PQ, as it is called by the locals, has a wide variety of housing and you can typically get a little more house for your money here than in the other communities of the Poway Unified School District.
And houses are built on slightly larger lots than you usually find in Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain Ranch, and Sabre Springs. (But, if you are looking for an acre or more land, Poway may be your best bet.)
Penasquitos is home of the Doubletree Carmel Highlands Resort, with its 72 hole championship golf course, tennis college, spa, and convention meeting facilities.
There are three large retail plazas in Rancho Penasquitos for your shopping convenience.
For outdoor lovers, there is Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve, which contains a network of beautiful hiking trails through pristine natural habitat. Penasquitos has more parks than any other suburban community in San Diego. Two of the largest are Hilltop Park and Canyonside Park.
One totally unique feature of PQ is Christmas Card Lane. This is a 20 year tradition where over 200 homeowners along several blocks along Ellingham Street and adjacent streets display giant festive greeting cards made of plywood. The event, which starts December 15th and runs through New Year’s Eve, is so popular that it is faster to park and walk by to see the cards that to drive by them.
A new state-of-the-art high school is currently under construction at the west edge of Pensaquitos. Westview High will open with freshman and sophomore classes in August 2002 and is expected to have the top performing arts program in the Poway Unified School District.
Note: Almost all homes in Penasquitos are in the Poway Unified School District. However, there is a small section of homes in the southern portion of Penasquitos near Mercy Road that are not in the PUSD!
